Alaska Small Ship Cruises Lindblad Expeditions & National Geographic

Next up in choosing an Alaska cruise is often deciding when to go. This deciding factor can sometimes dictate what region is best to cruise. Charter a sailboat out of Seward and hit the waters of gorgeous Resurrection Bay!

Alaskan Dream Cruises

Bear Paw Charters offers private, all-inclusive day trips and longer tours on its luxury yacht — perfect for whale watching, bear viewing, and experiencing Alaska’s scenic majesty. What to pack - The Alaskan cruise season takes place between April - September, leading into and out of the summer months. The average temperatures are between 55f-65f (12-18c) and can drop by around 5 degrees at night, so clothing appropriate to these temperatures is required. Rainfall can be quite high in southeast Alaska, so a good waterproof jacket is also a good idea. Most Alaska cruise ships will have binoculars available, but if you have your own, bring them so you don’t have to wait for a pair to become free or share.

North Pacific Expeditions

Smaller vessels go where the big ships can’t thanks to shallow drafts that allow them to sail closer to shore. They also have more flexible itineraries and can anchor overnight in remote coves instead of busy ports. On big ships, the daily agenda is watching Alaska pass by through a set of binoculars, walking around the casino and eating at buffets.

Welcome Aboard

The spontaneous whale watching, nearly every day at some point, made the trip memorable. That the captain could slow down and maneuver in an area to extend our viewing is not something that could happen on an aircraft-carrier-sized cruise ship. Look for cruises aboard ships branded with National Geographic if you are seeking the highest level of education. To learn more about these unique guides, read our review of Lindblad Alaska. These “positioning” cruises offer a longer expedition covering the entire Inside Passage as well as British Columbia and often the San Juan Islands.

Rather, small ships are perfect for intimate exploration of off-the-beaten track waterways, narrow channels and tiny ports that passengers on large ships will never see. When Lindblad Expeditions guests visit a small port in Alaska's Inside Passage they don't overwhelm the local communities. The 62-passenger National Geographic Sea Bird and National Geographic Sea Lion have been with the line since 1981, but have been refurbished and are still well suited to long and short Alaska itineraries. The larger, newer National Geographic Quest( added in 2016) and National Geographic Venture (launched in 2018) carry 100 passengers apiece. Small ships in Alaska typically carry fewer than 100 passengers and have a far calmer vibe.

They payed attention to what people wanted out of the trip. Bethany, Chris the bartender, Phil, Sarah and Paul took good care of us especially. Tucker who drove our skiff boat, the captain and the first mate were very informative as well. The crew was amazing, and the food was a very nice surprise (very accommodating, plentiful and tasted great). I wanted to hike as much as I could, and this ship seemed to meet that. The boat was perfect for our family - lots of opportunities to do things and learn a lot.

I had never been to Petersburg, Alaska’s “Little Norway,” until I went there aboard a small ship. On yet another small-ship voyage I disembarked at Bartlett Cove, gateway to Glacier Bay, headquarters for the park service and site of the rustic yet comfy Glacier Bay Lodge. Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.
