The Proper Way to Work Your Quads

Only squat as deeply as your mobility allows. Take a big step out to the right with your right foot. Hinge forward at the hips, push your butt back, and bend your right knee to lower into a lunge. Push through your right foot as you lift your left leg, stepping forward in a lunge with your left foot in front. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointed out slightly.

Complete your reps and then repeat with the other leg. However, if you don’t want to have to worry about balancing, then you can lightly grip a sturdy object for assistance. This is also better for being able to squat through the heel since you can place your working leg out a little further forward if you hold onto something.

Overhead Squat

As you probably already know, squats are very effective to gain muscle but also to burn fat. Don’t hesitate to introduce them in your training sessions. You need to be hitting the weights at least three days per week. The research says that at the very least, training a minimum of two days per week is needed to maximize muscle growth. Lie on your back with a towel rolled up under your right knee. Rest your right heel on the floor.

Regular planks target the upper body, core, and hips. Single-leg deadlifts. Stability ball knee tucks. Speedskater jumps.

Reverse Lunge

Step back down from the stair or chair with the other foot. Stand tall with your feet together and arms in front of you. Keep your front knee over, but not beyond, your toes when lunging. Leaning slightly forward, lower down until your front thigh is almost parallel to the floor. If you’re using a weight, keep at least one hand free. Make sure the object you’re stepping on is solid and can’t move out from under you.

Start with your feet shoulder width apart. Point your toes slightly outwards and keep your arms at your sides. Pull your shoulders back, which will force you to keep your back straight throughout the movement.

Quadruped Rocking

If you do this every day, you’ll see serious results in the definition of your quads. Exercises which specifically target the quads are squats, leg presses and leg lifts. Do the exercise quickly.

Your warmup can include brisk walking or jogging or dynamic mobility exercises such as leg or arm swings. Train your leg muscles along with your entire body regularly if you want to gain strength and improve overall fitness. It’s okay to skip a day every so often, especially if you’re sick or injured. If you feel stressed or guilty about missing a day, make a plan for how you will make up the lost time.

Doing so can place excessive strain on your knee. To do this exercise, you'll need a resistance band, like a Theraband. You can buy one at a big box retail store or get one from your PT. Straighten your knees by slowly sliding up the wall until you are fully upright with knees straight. Want a bigger challenge?

So taking the time to target this muscle group through quad exercises is always a good idea. The hamstrings are located in the back of the thighs and consist of multiple muscles. They are connected from the end of the pelvis to the lower leg to help us extend our thighs backward as well as bend the knees. Wall slides are a great exercise that help strengthen the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes.

Jump Squat

It connects your kneecap to your thigh bone. Your quadriceps form one of the key muscle groups needed for knee function. They are the primary muscles of knee support, and weakness of your quads can lead to instability of the knees. If your knees have instability, you are at a higher risk of developing additional wear and tear to your joints. Return to the starting position and repeat with the other leg.

Bulgarian Split Squat

You may want to work with a physical therapist to be sure you're doing the exercises correctly at first. The best quadriceps exercises target all four of the muscles that make up this muscle group. Located at the front of your thigh, your quads work together to help raise the thigh and extend straighten the knee. Strong quads make for better hip flexion and knee stability, allowing you to walk, run, jump, squat, and climb stairs with greater ease.
